Must see places in Italy: Discover the Alps from above
The Iceman Ötzi Peak on the Val Senales Glacier is one of the highest viewing platforms in Europe and a true must-see place in Italy. From an altitude of 3,251 meters, you can enjoy the best view of the Alps, with 126 Three-thousanders visible across three countries. On clear days, you might even spot the blue of the Adriatic Sea on the horizon. Since its inauguration in 2020, this spectacular platform has received numerous accolades. The best part? You can reach it in just a few minutes' walk from the Glacier Hotel Grawand.
Experience the Alps from above
Sheer rock walls, rugged scree fields, a shimmering glacial lake, and the majestic King Ortler – this breathtaking viewpoint offers the best view of the Alps. You can also see the Hochjochferner Glacier, nestled in the Ötztal Alps, as well as the watershed that forms the border between Austria and Italy. Here, waters flow in two directions: one towards the Black Sea, the other towards the Adriatic. You can even trace the path of transhumance, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019. Every June, shepherds lead around 4,000 sheep across the glacier on a 44-kilometer journey to the Ötz Valley in Northern Tyrol.
Following in Ötzi’s footsteps
The name of this viewing platform is no coincidence: Over 5,300 years ago, the famous Iceman Ötzi wandered through this mountain region. Today, the steel structure offers a direct view of the Similaun snowfield, where in 1991, the world’s oldest and most famous ice mummy was discovered. Who knows, perhaps Ötzi himself once stood at this very spot, admiring the best view of the Alps.
How to reach the viewing platform in Val Senales
The Iceman Ötzi Peak sits atop the Grawand Summit on the Val Senales Glacier, one of the most easily accessible peaks in the world. The Val Senales Glacier Cable Car takes you to the mountain station in just 6 minutes, where the Glacier Hotel Grawand is located. From there, a steel staircase with a handrail leads you 40 meters higher to one of the highest viewing platforms in Europe at 3,251 meters. This is one of the must-see places in Italy, offering the best view of the Alps!
